Slaughtering Meat Chickens

(This page is included because we feel people should be educated about where their meat comes from and how "meat" happens.)

Slaughtering meat chickens has been a part of the business plan since the beginning. Aside from raising the chickens in the most humane and happy-chicken fashion, we mean to make the end of their life humane as well by slaughtering on the farm, rather than distressing the chickens with transport to a processing facility. We feel that if people are going to eat meat, it should be local, sustainable and humane.

When we ordered our chickens, we chose chickens that were "dual purpose," able to produce both meat and eggs. Our long term business plan is to primarily raise meat chickens with the less financially viable eggs being a smaller, secondary element of the operation. To practice we took three of the plumpest chickens and prepared a home grown dinner.
